Regarding Writing residencies
Melissa works with students to create a *real* (self-published) picture book or anthology. She puts everything together, converts it to pdf, publishes it under the Bud Books imprint of Froward Press, and provides the url that enables anyone to purchase a printed copy at wholesale. In some cases, Melissa can apply for funding to purchase a book for every student author, but the teacher/organizer must secure a 501c3 nonprofit through which to apply. Click THIS LINK to view previously published anthologies. Check out THIS READING of stories written by Winston Salem 3rd-graders. And HERE’S A LINK to students reading their completed stories to each other.
Melissa also creates age-appropriate, site-specific story books that enable organizations and schools to provide in-depth education and outreach regarding recent initiatives and projects, highlighting practical science and sustainability in a personal way that goes beyond what can be accomplished with signage. Here's the first book created in this manner, about a stormwater control measure installed on an elementary school playground. Click the white arrow at right to view a video about the book’s creation and purpose.
And here is the book Melissa wrote for the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke, VA, to educate the public about an endangered and adorable fish in their waterway (see also https://roanoke.com/news/local/education/roanoke-kiwanis-club-larry-the-roanoke-logperch-childrens-book/article_126e5c66-d669-11ee-a994-dfcd79f51644.html ):
