On the occasion of my son starting college...

Yesterday, my eyes wet and my heart full, we drove home from Asheville, NC, for the first time without our son Seamus. (After a stressful college decision, Seamus just started his first year studying Music Technology at UNC-Asheville.) From the get-go, we have tried to raise our children to be empathetic, nonmaterialistic, inclusive, generous, and happy people. To see this materialize makes my life worth living. But this chapter has a hint of sadness unlike any of those before. And that sadness becomes more beautiful as I sort through what he's left behind and remember. The high-resolution photo below is the poem I wrote for him on his second birthday (the one after his actual birth day), which is still hanging on his bedroom wall. Seeing it put me right back in front of that clunky Dell laptop, the house a mess and the babies sleeping (fingers crossed), determined to give my second born a one-year birthday poem, just like his sister. As I read it now, all I feel is gratitude.
